Blog Article What Is Couples Therapy?

In my first conversations with couples, I hear some version of the same thing: “We need help with our communication.” Or, “We used to be so close, until ___ happened.”

By the time couples find their way to my office, they’re often in real pain. The relationship that once felt like a safe haven doesn’t anymore. Life has gotten in the way — careers, the realities of building a life with or without children, illness, job loss, mental health struggles, aging parents. Somewhere along the way, the connection suffered.

The early work of couples counseling is about understanding the landscape — each partner’s individual story, and the unique pattern the two of you have built together. We spend intentional time together rediscovering who you were and who you are now, what ways have you been shaped by the hardships of life, how you move together and apart.

This is hard work. It asks both partners to question their assumptions and move from feeling hurt to understanding the larger picture — and that shift doesn’t happen overnight. Along the way, there’s often blame: “Why did you say it that way?” “Why would you do that when you know it bothers me?” That’s when the familiar cycle kicks in — pointing fingers, long fights, silence, loneliness, hopelessness.

But underneath the conflict is almost always something else, each partner’s individual experiences, stories, traumas, emotions, and ways of thinking — and the impact all of that has on the relationship. With guidance, partners can begin to reorient — to their own needs, to how they express those needs, and understanding when that process helps versus when it gets in the way.

There’s healing in naming the patterns that keep us stuck in our own hurt. There’s healing in writing new stories — about ourselves, our partners, and our relationship.

One thing I come back to often is that avoidance offers short-term relief, but never long-term resolution. I love helping couples work toward connection and reconnection — figuring out, together, what’s within our control to change, and what parts of ourselves and our partners need acceptance and nurturing.

That’s the work. And I love it.
